Here are the thoughts of some of our current volunteers:
‘I have been volunteering at Surrey History Centre for about six months and it has been an enormously rewarding experience. I have found out all sorts of odd and interesting facts about Surrey and its history, and had the opportunity to work with some very friendly volunteers as well as mentors who are knowledgeable, helpful and appreciative. The work has been varied, ranging from cataloguing local newspapers of the Great War period, an immersion in the period which is absorbing and at times moving, technical work mapping grid co-ordinates for the launch of a new website, cataloguing of postcards, a subject with a whole area of knowledge to learn behind it – and even helping out at events, setting up displays and providing refreshments to visitors. Definitely an experience to recommend!’
‘History has always been my passion and after careers in teaching and childcare, I was longing to get back into research. This project gives me a unique experience to find out first-hand about what some of my county’s men and women did during the Great War and it has been fascinating to hear their stories. As a full-time mum, I especially like the flexibility to fit in my family commitments with the opportunity to fulfil my personal interests, and also to meet other volunteers who share the same interests as me.’
‘Volunteering allows me to see how things operate in the field of history, while enabling me to play a part in projects such as Surrey in Great War. It also helps me to explore what I would like to do if I take a career in history.’
