Right from the start of the war, families and communities across Surrey rallied together to support the troops at the front by providing them with comforts in the shape of warm clothing (socks, scarves etc), food parcels and luxuries such as chocolate and cigarettes.  Churches, chapel, clubs and societies all participated and local associations sprang up across the county which fundraised for and produced clothing and blankets for serving soldiers, local war hospitals, and prisoners of war.  One such association whose records have survived was the Chertsey Women’s War Work Association, which made comforts for troops and supported The Grange War Hospital, Chertsey.  Its output was prodigious: between November 1915 and June 1919, the association made in total 11,140 items.
