William was the eldest son of John (a labourer) and Sarah Underwood, living at Lashams, Witley. William married Caroline Jane Salmon (born 1885) in Farncombe on 3 August 1907. They moved to 40 Mare Lane, Farncombe where they are found in the 1911 census (when William listed his occupation as bricklayer) with their daughter, Joy, aged 3. Nothing is known of William’s service but he would have been in a war theatre before the end of 1915 to qualify for the 1914/15 Star which Caroline applied for after the war. William contracted enteric fever whilst in France and was hospitalised at Addington Park Hospital near Croydon, where he died.
William was buried in All Saints’ churchyard and his funeral was well attended. William is not on the All Saints’ Church memorial tablet possibly because his parents had died before the war ended, Caroline was in Farncombe and when the vicar was collecting names there was nobody to list him.
