Walter Pierre SYNNOTT

The family Surname was SYNNOTT, as is correctly engraved on the Woking Town Memorial. Walter was buried in Mhow New Cemetery under a correctly engraved Marker however, when the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC) abandoned the cemetery after 1947 and transferred the men’s names to the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial, some bureaucrat decided the surname was misspelt.

Walter was born 18 May 1897 in Dinard, Brittany, France and was living in Woking with his family at the time of the 1901 Population Census, and then educated at Wimbledon College, he died in India of Pneumonia, which considering the date could well have been caused by the Influenza Pandemic.

His Parents (Father was Irish, Mother was French) both died later in Woking, Walter’s only sibling, his sister Genevieve, was born Woking in 1900 and she died a spinster in 1953 on Alderney.
