Captain Harold Bache was killed leading his men at the first Battle of Ypres in 1915. He was serving with the 10th Lancashire Fusiliers. He had been a school teacher before volunteering in 1914.
He excelled not only at football, but at cricket, lawn tennis and hockey. He played football for West Bromwich Albion and the England amateur international team. One paper wrote that “He was very popular with the West Bromwich Albion and their supporters, who will mourn their loss.”
