The son of James Asling, Gunner Asling was born in Battersea in 1885 and enlisted at Woolwich.
Gunner Asling (service number 26184) was a member of 70 Company, Royal Garrison Artillery.
He was killed on 21st November 1915 and is buried at Maala Cemetery, Aden (now Yemen) Grave C.154.
Maala lies on the Southern side of Aden Harbour, halfway between Steamer Point and Crater. Most of the 142 Commonwealth servicemen of the 1914-1918 War buried here lost their lives in the defence of Aden against the Turks.
His name appears on the memorial plaque in St Mary’s Church, as does that of his brother James, who was killed in France in August of the same year.
